Tesla stops taking orders for the cheapest Model Y

Tesla stopped ordering the cheapest version of the Model Y electric SUV and removed it from its online configurator only a month after the vehicle was launched. The move comes in the sense of wider pricing and configuration shifts that are becoming difficult to adopt.

Last month, Tesla launched a new Model Y Standard Range RWD with a range of 244 miles.

The launch was surprising given that CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla would not manufacture the Model Y version because he said that the range would be “unacceptably low” at less than 250 miles. Tesla launched the variant of the EPA vehicle with an estimated range of 244 miles and a starting price of $42,000.

Last week, the automaker was shocked once again by lowering the price of the latest base version of the Model Y by $2,000 just a month after it was launched.

The price shift was part of a wider update of pricing across the Model 3 and Model Y lineup.

Now, just a few days later, Tesla confuses us all by stopping ordering the new Model Y Standard Range RWD and deleting it completely from its online configurator:

As normal, Tesla did not communicate any explanation behind this abrupt shift in the Model Y lineup.

The Model Y Standard Range also vanished from Tesla’s Canadian online configurator.

In addition to eliminating the base version of Model Y, Tesla also reduced the price of Model Y Long Range AWD by $1,000 to $48,990.

The version of the electric SUV, which is now becoming the basic version, was the only one not to receive a price change in last week’s update.
