By 2030, renewables will collectively surpass natural gas as the predominant source of electricity generation in the US, according to the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Annual Energy Outlook 2021. But that’s not enough of that.

The EIA also projects that the share of renewable energy in the US electricity generation mix will double from 21 per cent in 2020 to 42 per cent in 2050. The EIA predicts that all solar electricity generation (i.e. photovoltaic and thermal technologies, small-scale and utility installations) will surpass the wind by 2040 as the largest source of US renewable energy generation.

Natural gas, a fossil fuel, is expected to remain relatively constant at about one-third of the total generation from 2020 to 2050, and nuclear and coal are projected to decline. The EIA has made its estimate of green and natural gas dependent on the cost of renewable energy technologies and the price of natural gas.
